Classroom Rules and Redirecting Behaviors

5 Main Rules

  1. Use proper stretching techniques.
  2. Have a Positive attitude.
  3. Don't speak when the instructor is talking.
  4. Respect the equipment and other students in the studio/ 
  5. Don't be afraid to ask questions and speak up if you need help.
Expectations
  • Prepare the lesson (what the teacher needs to do before the class) 
  • Implement clear and positive communication
  • Be kind and respect boundaries

Behavior
  • Verbal;  Use activities to silence the class (clap if you hear me once, quiet coyote)
  • Physical; Simon Says to grab attention of class 
  • Cue; Complimenting good behavior and proper techniques
  • Redirecting; Using objects (such as colored mats or colored tape) to redirect the students to assigned spots in the studio 

Lesson Plan
  • Age Group: 6-8 (girls and boys)
  • Objective: to educate children in a fun and involving way that includes movement as well as verbal cues. This will aid their learning process to retain the necessary information. 
  1. Come prepared (with lesson plan)
  2. Be proficient with timing. 
  3. Start the class with a fun warmup and review objectives/lesson plan. 
  4. Execute activity. 
  5. Have each kid speak about what they learned and what they enjoyed for the lesson.
  6. Cool down 
  7. receive feedback

Mini Lesson 9/12

For our warmup, Lexi will teach. Each child does a different stretch. Attached with each stretching movement there is a number. When a student number is called out the class will preform their stretching movement. After our warmup Haley will participate in a dance movement circle in which you will add on a move to the person before you, making a collective dance in the end. Activities will go after our warmup. Lana and Madison will then start the element movement. Everyone in the class will choose an element., earth, fire, water or air. They will then move depending on which element they chose, the class and other students not knowing who is what element. If comfortable, students will express which element they chose and why. What does this movement make you feel? At the end of all activities we will conclude our session together and collectively ask questions, how was this experience? We will do a debrief and moment of mindfulness, allowing students to reflect on the experience.

  1. A set period of the day to unwind. Can be done at home or during the school week. This is a way to take their mind off of the other academics of school and even stressors on the weekend (social, etc).  Mondays: Stretching Tuesday: Writing anxious ideas/ stressors out on the board, practicing gratitude Wednesday: Painting/ Gardening/ Reading Day Thursday: Volunteering a pet shelter (rescue dogs)  Friday: Review of the week  Takeaways:  The importance of training the mind and how it relates to western schools. There are options available to use mindfulness in the classroom (program, a time of day, a topic, etc).

Unit Plan

Class Profile Ballet course Ages 8-10 year olds 10 students in the class  3 experienced with dance in formal setting. 1 no prior dance experience. 1 is handicapped. 3 students who have taken part in a different type of dance (ie hip hop). 2 have minimal experience with dance.
